The political party was founded in 2007 by Veselin Mareshki as the Liberal Alliance, but only took its current name in 2016.

This new dynamic allowed the party to win 12 MPs in the 2017 parliamentary elections. Volya decided to support the government that was formed in the aftermath.

The party claims to be patriotic by defending the values of the Bulgarian people and fighting against immigration, is part of the populist current while claiming to be reformist, fights against endemic corruption and, on the diplomatic front, advocates a rapprochement with Russia.
